ABOUT THE PIECE

This painting is both joyful and unsettling. That's what gives it its standout edge. It looks really fun until you realise what's going on. It takes you off guard. In parallel to real life, we live happily distracted by entertainment provided by our phones, TV and social media, blissfully unaware of wars going on in other countries for reasons we don't even know about.

Growing up in the UK the 1980’s, I was awe-struck by the culture and talent coming from America. From breakdancing, BMXing and Hip-Hop to iconic movies like Star Wars, E.T., Terminator & Rambo. And cultural icons like Carl Lewis, Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson. Run DMC, LL Cool J, Public Enemy and N.W.A. I was obsessed. America was an entertainment megaforce.

But then I got older and started to see America in a different light. Vietnam, Iraq, Libya, the Gulf War, Bosnia, Haiti, Kosovo. America seemed like a giant war machine with a thirst for violence. I felt it used entertainment as a way of deflecting attention away from the horrors and atrocities of its wars. Keep people occupied. Don’t look over there, look over here! We've got MTV!

We are being constantly fed information, ideologies, stereotypes, dogma and societal beliefs. Media controls how we see our world. It can amplify fear, or it can completely hide atrocities of wars we never even hear about. We are instead, given endless entertainment from Netflix to social media that keeps us stimulated and distracted.
