ABOUT THE PIECE
Me, aged 8, playing with my He-Man figures, obsessed with the cartoon and all the characters, oblivious to the clear messages and semiotics being conveyed to me about what it is to be a hero. I was unknowingly sold an image of a gigantic muscular body being the key to becoming a hero. If you don't have this body, you're basically a nobody. You can never be a hero. Do you see any non olympian looking characters in He-Man? Nope. Society has created a belief in us from an early age that to be a hero, to be successful, to be desirable, to be respected or famous, to be a somebody, you have to have a refined muscular, physical body.
Backed up by stereotypes and role models in advertising, the media, Hollywood, even toys and cartoons, and then doubled down on by social media, this myth of success via a six pack creates pressure and anxiety, feelings of failure, depression and incompleteness in people who don’t have that body. And is that what really make a man, that makes a hero? Seriously?
Should we instead, try to instil aspirational character qualities instead of physical qualities into younger people to inspire the next generation of heroes? How do these show up on social media or in advertising?
