ABOUT THE PIECE
Apotheosis is the glorification of a subject to divine level and most commonly, the treatment of a human like a god. In art, the term refers to the treatment of any subject in a particularly grand or exalted manner.
I want the viewer to meditate on the realisation that we are all divine beings, all created equal, all made of the same stuff. All different variations, but all perfect none-the-less.
We start off perfect and pure and over time we create beliefs and ideologies, stereotypes and ideas that aren't really ours, if you think about it. We learn a great deal from our parents, friends and colleagues. We pick up nuanced information, semiotics, beliefs, viewpoints and behaviours from films, TV, advertising, news and the media. These all shape our perception of ourselves. By the time we're adults, we've almost forgotten who we really are. So many of our beliefs are given to us and now we don't know what we believe to be true or what someone has told us. By contemplating the skull you realise your mortality and temporary time on Earth but also that you are the same as everyone else. No one is better or worse, we are all the same, but just acquired different beliefs and ideas along the way.
Remember your own god-like divinity and start treating yourself accordingly.
