Eros was the Greek god of love, or more precisely, passionate and physical desire. Without warning he selects his targets and forcefully strikes at their hearts, bringing confusion and irrepressible feelings or, in the words of Hesiod, he 'loosens the limbs and weakens the mind'
Physical desire and the desire to be more. I feel surrounded by messages and encoding, images and lifestyles that I can never have or never achieve. These advertising images we are exposed to daily are created to make you want more, to strive for something you’ll never have. They can be inspiring on their own, and they are super beautiful, but in the mass quantity that we are exposed to on a daily basis are more likely to overwhelm and lead to anxiety, depression and feelings of lack.
These images tell us we are not enough so we buy the products to prove to ourselves that we are enough and we can have that life. But we don’t need that life. Not when we have ‘life’. Everything we need, we already have. We are complete as humans. We are enough. I’m am not less because I don’t own a Saint Laurent card holder or some Gucci man bag.
This painting is a reduction of the power of the original, faded by the cubist abstraction. The huge lollipop highlights the ridiculousness of the unattainable life you can never have. This painting was based on a fragrance advert from Versace. I recycled the image and decontextualised it to become a reminder that we are perfect as we are, we are enough. No amount of Versace fragrance will change that.
